2022 Jeep Compass spy shots: New tech on the way
Jeep in November unveiled an updated Compass at the annual Auto Ghuangzhou 2020 show in China, and now a prototype for the version destined for sale in North America has been spotted.
The current generation of the popular compact crossover SUV was introduced for the 2017 model year as a replacement for the previous Compass, as well as the Patriot. The updated version is due on sale in 2021 as a 2022 model.
The updated Compass will wear revised fascias at both ends plus slimmer headlights. The bigger news is what’s happening on the inside. The entire dash will be replaced by a new design sporting a 10.1-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment and a 10.25-inch display for the instrument cluster. It isn’t clear whether the latter will be a standard feature or available. The steering wheel and center console will also be changed to more modern designs.

Here in the United States, the Compass is powered exclusively by a 180-horsepower 2.4-liter inline-4 that can be had with a manual or automatic transmission. The automatic is a 6-speed in front-wheel-drive, lower-grade models, and a 9-speed in the all-wheel-drive Limited and Trailhawk grades.
In other markets, Jeep offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Dubbed 4xe, the powertrain relies on a 1.3-liter inline-4 up front and an electric motor at the rear. Output ranges from 190 to 240 hp, and an 11.4-kilowatt-hour battery provides a short range of pure electric driving. The same powertrain is offered in the Renegade overseas, but Jeep is yet to confirm whether we’ll see it in the U.S. Jeep has started selling a Wrangler plug-in hybrid here, though the powertrain in this vehicle is different to the one in the Compass and Renegade.
Jeep has a busy year ahead. In addition to this updated Compass, we’ll also see a redesigned Grand Cherokee which will have a three-row option for the first time. There will also be the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer full-size duo arriving in the new year.

2022 Jeep Compass-based 3-row crossover spy shots: Compact family hauler in the works
Jeep has been spotted testing a new three-row crossover in Europe.
The mystery model is a compact offering that will likely skip the United States. It’s related to the Compass and was first announced by Jeep parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (now Stellantis) during a 2018 presentation, where it was referred to as a “Low D 3-Row” crossover.
The Compass itself is due to be updated shortly and we’ll likely see this three-row crossover arrive about the same time, possibly badged a Compass L, just as the new three-row Grand Cherokee is called a Grand Cherokee L. The updates pegged for the Compass include sharper styling and a revamped interior with modern tech.
Jeep 2022 roadmap
Though heavily camouflaged, we can see that the three-row crossover’s front section is similar to the front section of prototypes for the updated Compass. The stretched body is unique to the three-row version and likely has space for seven, although the rear seats will likely accommodate small children only.
Jeep already sells a compact three-row crossover in China, which is related to the Cherokee. It’s called the Grand Commander and was launched in 2018. This Compass-based three-row crossover will offer the same compact size and three-row practicality for buyers in the rest of the world, and possibly China as well.

Jeep’s nip-and-tucked 2022 Compass shows up camouflage-free in China
The minor visual tweaks could hide major updates

Jeep is preparing to give the Compass, one of its smallest and most affordable models, a series of updates outside, inside, and under the hood. It’s not expected to unveil the model until early 2021, but images taken in China give us an early look at what to expect when the revamped Compass makes its official debut.
Spotted by CarBuzz, the photos look like they were snapped at a Jeep facility across the Pacific, and they show two variants of the crossover. Both wear a new-look front end characterized by slightly sharper lights, a grille that’s a little bit taller, and a redesigned lower bumper. Stylists again gave the off-road-oriented Trailhawk model a trim-specific front end with a shorter bumper that increases the approach angle. Out back, the modifications are seemingly limited to lights that look slightly darker, and the Trailhawk loses its red tow hook.
Jeep refrained from making significant design changes to the Compass, though keep in mind it also builds the crossover in Guangzhou, China, through a joint venture with the state-owned carmaker GAC. We’re not ruling out the possibility that the model shown in the images will be exclusively sold on the Chinese market, but the aforementioned changes are aligned with the fully camouflaged prototypes we’ve spotted testing in Detroit.
While interior images were not leaked, we’ve learned the Compass will get an updated interior with a tablet-style touchscreen mounted high on the dashboard. It will run the latest generation of the Uconnect infotainment system. Other minor changes (like trim revisions and new-look gauges) will likely be on the roster, too, but we’re not expecting a complete overhaul.
Here’s a slideshow of the current design for comparison:

There are new taillights, too.
The folks at the Gabetz Spy Unit caught the refreshed Jeep Compass on the road. The camouflage hides a lot, but there’s a small glimpse into the cabin.
In addition to the stripey camouflage pattern, the Compass has a covering over the front end for extra concealment. Only the upper edge of the grille is visible. Unfortunately, this makes figuring out the differences for the nose an impossible task.

At the back, the Compass gets a new set of taillights. Rather than having a larger lamp on the outer edges, the pieces are the same height all the way across. The camo hides whether there are any additional changes for the rear end.
A shot of the Compass’ profile captures a peek at the cabin. It’s possible to see a tablet-like infotainment screen that raises above the dashboard. The layout looks completely different than the crossover’s current Uconnect display.
It’s not clear whether there would be powertrain changes accompanying this refresh. In Europe, the 2021 Compass gets a new turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder with 130 horsepower (97 kilowatts) or 150 hp (112 kW) in the S trim level. The Compass 4xe is also on the way with a plug-in hybrid powertrain available with 190 or 240 hp (142 or 179 kW) and an estimated EV range of 31 miles (50 kilometers).
Get The Direction Of The Compass:
In Jeep’s five-year plan from 2018, it said that the refreshed Compass was arriving by 2022. The company has already outlined changes for the 2021 model in Europe. Therefore, we expect the updated crossover to debut next year and likely in the first half to be ready for the changeover to the 2022 model year.

2022 Jeep Compass Spied Showing More Lights, Less Grille
The updated SUV remains an elusive catch for the camera.
For Jeep fans around the world, present-day attention is focused in two directions. The new Grand Wagoneer is coming soon, as previewed by the concept that broke cover at the beginning of September. There’s also the excitement about a V8-powered Wrangler that could be coming, but changes are in the works for the compact Compass as well.
This is only the second time facelifted prototypes have been caught in the public eye. The photos come to us courtesy of Gabetz Spy Unit on Facebook, showing vehicles still fully camo-wrapped and carrying heavy covers on the front fascia. Despite the aggressive concealment we aren’t expecting to see a tremendous difference upfront – Jeep’s iconic seven-slat grille will endure though it might grow slightly in size. The latest shots reveal new headlights that keep the basic style of the current Compass but appear narrower. Revisions to the lower fascia are likely as well.
The backside isn’t obscured with heavy coverings, though camouflage wrap does well to hide body lines. Still, the lack of coverings suggests changes at the rear aren’t as dramatic. We can see reshaped taillights in what looks like a rear gate very similar to the current Compass. Very minor changes to the lower fascia should further separate the facelifted model from the current offering.
Previous sightings gave us a glimpse into the greenhouse, albeit from a distance. It was still enough for us to see a new tablet-style infotainment screen sitting atop the dash, which is completely different from the current model. As such, we suspect the crux of this refresh will focus on creating a fresh interior with cleaner lines and fewer manual controls. Under the hood we expect current Compass powertrain options to carry over.
It’s A Jeep Thing:
At this point, we’re expecting to see the refreshed compact SUV unveiled sometime next year, likely in the first quarter. That would set it up to be a new global offering for the 2022 model year.
