Jeep Compass vs Nissan Qashqai: Which is better to buy?

Faced with the dilemma of buying an SUV or an SUV to get out of the asphalt, the Nissan Qashqai and the Jeep Compass offer an interesting debate about the decision on which car to buy. One is the king of the segment, while the other came when the SUV had already established itself as an essential part of the market, but providing a solid background of off-road vehicle.

Design

Any brand that wants to enter the field of SUVs has to pay an expensive toll, to measure against the first commercial SUV and an absolute success of sales that democratized the raised bodies and turned them into the workhorse that they now use all brands.

The Nissan Qashqai is a mature product, which knows what its customers are looking for and for that reason its asset in its recent renovation is that of an SUV with pleasing lines to the eye that preserves the master lines that served to triumph in previous generations.

Meanwhile the Jeep Compass uses a slightly different proposal, with proportions that are more reminiscent of the authentic off – road of the American brand and a familiar face with the characteristic grid of seven vertical stripes.

Dimensions and Habitability

LENGTH (MM) WIDTH (MM) HEIGHT (MM) DISTANCE BETWEEN AXES (MM)
Jeep Compass 4394 1819 1647 2636
Nissan Qashqai 4394 1806 1645 2646

Regarding the external dimensions, the Jeep Compass and the Nissan Qashqai almost reach the technical tie. Both SUVs have an identical length to the edge of the 4.4 meters while the Compass is slightly wider (+13 mm) and almost the same height with a difference of only 2 mm. Where the Nissan Qashqai does win is in the wheelbase with 10 mm more of battle.

Going inside, the Nissan Qashqai looks more sober and, although it has a year behind it, it also looks more modern than the Jeep Compass. The Compass pulls curved and soft lines in one of those genuinely Italian American designs, while the Japanese is, that, more Japanese both for the sobriety of the forms and the materials used.

While the volume of the trunk leaves us again in boards with 438 liters for the Jeep Compass and 430 liters for the Nissan Qashqai, the Japanese SUV wins by a landslide when we lower the rear seats, leaving a much more capable space of cargo in addition to usable with up to 1,598 liters: 347 liters more than its rival.

Motorizations

Thinking about its type of mainly urban customer, the Nissan Qashqai makes a completely rational distribution of its engines with three gasoline engines (115, 140 and 160 HP) and three diesel (110, 115 and 130 HP). The Xtronic automatic transmission of continuous variator is available for diesel versions of 130 hp and petrol 115 hp, while the integral transmission 4×4-i can be equipped only with the 130 hp diesel engine.

The Jeep Compass for its part takes five different engines slightly more than the Japanese. The gasoline engines offer 140 and 170 HP; Diesel have 120, 140 and 170 HP. The 4×2 traction is available for 140 hp gas and 120 hp diesel and the 4 x 4 for gasoline 170 hp and 140 and 170 hp diesel.

Where the Jeep Compass is most complete is in its face offroad, with a complete system of driving aids outside the asphalt Jeep Active Drive and Selec-Terrain to get the most out of the 30º angle of entry, 33.6º of exit and 24.4º of ventral angle.

MODEL POWER MEDIUM CONSUMPTION PRICE
Gasoline
Nissan Qashqai 1.2 DIG-T 115 HP 5.1 l / 100 km 23,500
Nissan Qashqai 1.4 DIG-T 140 HP 5.3 l / 100 km 22,800
Nissan Qashqai 1.4 DIG-T 160 CV 5.3 l / 100 km 24,150
Jeep Compass 1.4 Multiair II 140 HP 6.2 l / 100 km 25,800
Jeep Compass 1.4 Multiair II 170 HP 4.4 l / 100 km 37,530
Diesel
Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi 110 CV 3.8 l / 100 km 23,600
Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi Euro 6 115 HP 3.8 l / 100 km 24,000
Nissan Qashqai 1.6 dCi 130 HP 4.4 l / 100 km 25,350
Jeep Compass 1.6 Multijet II 120 CV 4.4 l / 100 km 27,630
Jeep Compass 2.0 Multijet II 140 HP 5.2 l / 100 km 32,830
Jeep Compass 2.0 Multijet II 170 HP 5.7 l / 100 km 40,230

Multimedia and Security

The Nissan Qashqai incorporates some interesting technologies that have already been made extensive in the market, such as the front and rear vision camera and overhead with 360º vision, smart parking assistant (in parallel or battery, with cross traffic detection and objects in motion), ProPILOT assistant (lane maintenance, adaptive speed control with stop function and resumption of driving), pedestrian detection, frontal anti-collision system and adaptive lighting.

Through the 7-inch touch screen, the Qashqai Nissan Connect compatible with iOS and Android integrates our smartphone in the car, being able to use a large part of its uses, including social networks.

The Jeep Compass for its part tries to postulate as an off-road car but modernized with a large touch screen in the center console of 8.4 inches that opens the doors to connectivity with Uconnect, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, plus Mopar Connect services (with subscription).

The Compass also equips up to 70 active and passive safety functions with front collision warning plus and plus rail exit warning (standard on the entire range), GPS navigation blind spot detector and cross traffic control, rear view camera, parking assistance system, adaptive cruise control, electronic stability control (ESC) and six airbags as standard.

Our Final Conclusion

Anyone looking for a mid-size SUV, comfortable, spacious, practical, with an above-average price / quality ratio and the guarantee of buying a car that has made a name in the market should choose the Nissan Qashqai. It is a car that has evolved correctly over the years, improving where it has needed to continue on the crest of the sales wave.

In exchange for a higher price, the Jeep Compass comes standard more equipped and with a slightly higher range of performance thanks to some more powerful engines, but not too much. In addition we cannot lose sight of its best qualities for use outside the asphalt, but against the American off-road has an average consumption also higher.
