Audi Q7

New for 2015

The 2015 Audi Q7 now gains chrome and full paint finish accents as standard. Two new exterior styling packages with optional all-season tires are now available: Offroad style plus and Sport plus style package. Premium plus models now include Audi side assist while the luxury package now includes extended leather and a black Alcantara headliner with contrast stitching. A redesigned Q7 arrives for the 2016 model year.

Vehicle Summary

The 2015 Audi Q7 is a three-row luxury crossover with seating for seven passengers and comes standard with quattro all-wheel drive.

Overview

Two engines are offered on the 2015 Audi Q7: a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 280 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque in standard guise and 333 hp and 325 lb-ft in crossovers equipped with the S Line package, and a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V-6 with 240 hp and 406 lb-ft. Both engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is decent with the base engine at 16/22 mpg city/highway while diesel-powered Q7s are more efficient at 19/28 mpg.

Despite its weight and size the 2015 Audi Q7 handles decently since it drives smaller than it is and doesn’t feel too bulky, making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces. The supercharged V-6 and turbodiesel V-6 power plants provide good power for passing and merging thanks to both units having a lot of torque to pull the large crossover.

The 2015 Q7’s cabin build quality is impeccable with high-grade materials and supportive seats that are very comfortable. Interior space is also generous with room for seven passengers and up to 72.5 cubic feet of cargo volume with the second and third rows folded. The MMI infotainment system, however, has a learning curve and takes some time to get used to. Additionally, third row seating is best reserved for children since it only offer 29.2 inches of legroom and 35 inches of headroom.

The 2015 Audi Q7 has four star rollover safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars).

UPDATE: In IIHS evaluations, the SUV received a Good score in three categories (Good is the highest possible score).

What We Think

The 2015 Audi Q7 is a good choice among three-row luxury crossovers with its well-built cabin, available diesel engine and good handling. In a 2011 First Drive review, we said that the Q7 drives smaller than it is and is «surprisingly light on its feet,» allowing it to easily squeeze through tight spaces. However, the crossover’s good handling comes at cost of ride quality because it «rides firmly on highways and straight roads, and communicates bumps.» Both powertrain combinations offer strong acceleration, which makes passing and merging easy despite the crossover’s heavy weight. The Q7’s interior, like all Audis, remains a strong point with excellent build quality and high levels of comfort. Its infotainment system, on the other hand, isn’t user-friendly, as we noted in a 2011 First Test since it takes some time to get used to using it.
